Fissure sealants

Jessica Clark SA Dental HR 0081

What are fissure sealants?

  • Fissures are the grooves on the biting surfaces of your back teeth.
  • When fissures are deep and narrow, it can be difficult to remove food and plaque bacteria through regular brushing. As a result, tooth decay can begin in the
    fissures of the teeth.
  • Fissure sealants are thin protective coatings that seal the fissures of your teeth and make it easier to clean.
  • Fissure sealants are a non-invasive and safe way to reduce the risk of decay.

How are fissure sealants applied?

  • The tooth to be sealed is thoroughly cleaned.
  • Cotton rolls or rubber dam may be used to help keep the tooth dry.
  • A weak acid gel is applied to the tooth surface and rinsed away with water.
  • The liquid fissure sealant is placed onto the fissures of the tooth, using a small brush or applicator.
  • With some materials, a light is used to set the liquid fissure sealant leaving a hard, thin layer of material in the fissures.

How long do fissure sealants last?

  • Fissure sealants are durable and can last for months or even years.
  • Each mouth and tooth is unique, and the coating may wear down at different rates for different people.
  • Eating sticky foods, such as lollies, can affect how long a fissure sealant will last.
  • The condition of your sealants will be reviewed at your dental check-up, so regular dental visits are important.
  • Fissure sealants can be replaced or repaired if needed.

How are fissure sealants maintained?

  • Fissure sealed teeth do not require any additional home care.
  • Good oral health care will protect all of your teeth from tooth decay.

To keep teeth healthy and prevent decay:

  • Brush each morning and before bed at night.
  • Use a small, soft toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste.
  • After brushing, spit the toothpaste out but do not rinse with water.
  • Reduce the frequency of sugary food and drink throughout the day.
  • Choose healthy snacks like fruit and cheese.
  • Drink plain tap water – avoid soft drinks, energy drinks, cordial and juices.
